Illustrate-Show date with Illustrators
Illustration is the art of visual communication. "Illustrate"
comes from the Latin word "illustrare", meaning to purify
and to make bright. It aims to deliver the visual effect to
articles or concepts and to strengthen its contagious power.
Imagine how boring our daily life would be if illustrations
were taken out from all designs including magazines and
advertising. Thus, illustration plays a vital role in the creative
industry. Recently, figures animations and comic books have
become popular. It indicates illustration is no longer a cosmetic
for text but a tool of communication.
"Illustrate-Show" is one of the "interactive" activities organized
by The Hong Kong Society of Illustrators. More than 20 local
illustrators are participating in Illustrate-Show (Plug). It
emphasizes on the message that illustration brings, as well as
communication between people; we provide channel for creativity
(human), just like the conduit for electricity (plug). Its objective
is to deliver a clear and strong message from illustration and
person-to-person communication. We display drawing drafts from
various stages along with finished artwork to show the workflow
in the creative and conceptual process.
Illustrators today are no longer being the silence craftsmen behind
their artworks; illustrators are artists performing their talents
with heart and soul, and blood and flesh. These artists are striving
to create true art out of a professional and ordinary life, and make
their mark between an artistic and pop culture.
The Illustrate-Show was first exhibited at Taikoo Place and then at
Hong Kong Chingying Institute of Visual Arts. It has been receiving
numerous good reviews. We were later invited by City University of
Hong Kong and Artist Commune to have a touring exhibition. We
see it as a great opportunity to get more responses from different
type audiences.
